Wunderkammer

Wunderkammer is a German word which in English means a place where a collection of curiosities and rarities is exhibited.

The classic Wunderkammer date back to the sixteenth century, with some more rudimentary collections existing even earlier. These precursors to the modern museum were often formed by members of the merchant class and early practitioners of science in Europe in addition to the most famous and best documented cabinets of rulers and aristocrats. Objects often included in a modern Wunderkammer would belong to natural history (sometimes faked), geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art (including cabinet paintings), and antiquities.

Wunderkammer in Melbourne is a store which sells wondrous, strange, fantastic items related to the Cabinets of Curiosities. In this shop you can find diverse minerals, large range of fossils, surgery tools, anatomical models, large range of animal specimens (fox, butterfly, spider, deer) or animal skeletons such as a rat, snake and bat; herbarium and vintage scientific instrument. Most of the items are assembled inside a glass fronted wooden cabinet in an old-fashioned way. The store looks archaic and mysterious, it is a good place to go searching for special decoration or to pick some unique gift for friends. Or just visit as a museum full of unusual things.
