Hosier Lane

Walk through this amazing piece of artistic history!

When you think Melbourne, some of the words that come to mind surely must be 'coffee', 'laneways' and 'street art'. Melbourne’s street art covers almost every nook and cranny of this creative, colourful city. Walk down the famous bluestone laneway and admire the street art that has made the Melbourne urban art scene known across the globe. Hosier Lane is located between Swanston and Russell streets, extending from Flinders Street through to Flinders Lane. Rutledge Lane connects in a C shape to the west of Hosier Lane. Both sides of the street is filled with graffiti and showcases the great artistic side of Melbourne. This is a popular spot with tourists and will surely be packed any time of day.

Hosier Lane today has become a brightly lit lane well known for its quirky bars and the stencil graffiti art which adorns the lane's brick walls. The artwork decorating the walls lanes have been approved by the City of Melbourne as registered street artwork. Local and international artists use the walls as a temporary canvas for their works, and even without knowing the stories behind the paintings or the artists, the art is very interesting to look at. Melbourne's famous street balanced precariously between legal and illegal, on open display but hidden from view. Some artist-led tour adds layers of knowledge and expertise to its otherwise overwhelming spread of art.

Hosier Lane is arguably the central point of the city's street art scene. Spend a long while checking out every little bit of this overflowing art cluster. Numerous creative mark has been left on almost anything with a surface and sometimes it's the smaller, easily overlooked pieces that really astound.

As it is a free attraction in the CBD, it is worth going to and checking out. You  may need to be patient if you are taking photos and want to stroll around this alleyway, because it is so popular and can get extremely crowded during the day. If you’re lucky would be able to find a group of artists tracing and creating a new piece of art. If we could sum on this lane in a few word it would be “you must see it to believe it!”
