The ANZ branch at 380-388 Collins St, located on the north-east corner of the Collins and Queen St, is known to many as the Gothic Bank for its august 19th century gothic architecture.

Built in the 1880s, the 'Gothic Bank' was initially the head office for ES&A (the predecessor to ANZ). Within the building is also the residence of George Verdon, the General Manager of ES&A at the time, and is now known as the Verdon Chambers which contains 17 rooms. The neighbouring building at 380 Collins St served as the former Melbourne Stock Exchange and in 1923 was renovated and combined with the ES&A bank situated on the corner. Looking at it from the street outside, you can see the distinct contrast in design but once inside you can easily walk between the two. The residential part of the building known as the Verdon Chambers are considered haunted and is not as accessible as the Gothic Bank. Some consider the building to be haunted at night.

Still used as a bank branch to this day, you can walk in to check out the beautiful features and truly understand why this building is listed by the National Trust of Australia. The wall and ceiling decoration is covered with ornate 23-karat gold leaf and the column remind you of ancient throne rooms. You can also walk to the quiet Cathedral Room located behind the main banking chamber and check out the stained glass windows. The Gothic Bank is one of the last remaining buildings in Melbourne built during the economic boom of the 19th century as a result of the gold rush.

While you're there, you should also check out the ANZ Banking Museum which is located under the Gothic Bank on the lower ground level. The opening hours are the same as the bank.
